LIFE OF SHAKESPEARE
- Shakespeare was born an April 23, 1564 in Stratford. He was married to Anne Hathaway. At a young age, he established himself as a playwright. He is known for his many tragedies but also has written many plays that have endings which leave the audience in a better mood.
SUMMARY OF THE TEMPEST
- In the Tempest, Prospero is an omnipotent, omnipresent wizard who lives on an island with his daughter and servants. One day he is joined on the Island by a few of the people from his past life as duke of Milan. Prospero puts these people through many troubles before the end of the play when they all redeem themselves in some way and gain his forgiveness and Prospero retakes his rightful place as Duke of Milan
THEMES
- The Tempest has many themes, some of which include love, reconciliation, dreams, nature, and vengeance. The theme of love is established by Ferdinand and Miranda because they fall in love on the island. The theme of reconciliation is seen all throughout the play by almost all of the characters. Even though Prospero's brother did him wrong in the past, he was redeemed at the end of the play.
CHARACTERS
Caliban- In the play, Caliban is Prospero's slave who gets a hold of alcohol and plots to kill his master. Nobody knows exactly what Caliban looks like but he is described as a "hag-seed", and a "strange fish."
Prospero- Prospero is a powerful wizard and former duke of Milan. He was set afloat to die and landed on the island where he mastered his wizardry. Prospero's appearance is also unknown but he is describes s great and majestic.
Ariel- Ariel is Prospero's servant but is more of a companion than a slave. Ariel has no specific gender or appearance at all. Her role in the play was to do all of prospero's deeds behind the scenes.
Symbols -
Books - I think Prospero's books represent all of Shakespeare's plays. The books are the source of Prospero's magic and he is completely vulnerable without them. I think Shakespeare is saying that his plays are all he has and without them he is nothing.
The Tempest - The Tempest in the beginning symbolizes all the pain and suffering endured by Prosper and all the pain that he wishes to inflict on those who ruined his life.
